“It was a cold day in November at my Sears Optical location in Wauconda, Illinois (Chicago suburb). In my chair sat a gentleman in his mid-fifties, in for a “routine exam”. As I was taking his history, I couldn’t help but notice that he was sweating significantly. When I questioned him about his sweating, he said it had been happening often lately. I followed up with “how is your blood-pressure”, to which he replied, “it’s probably high as I can’t afford the medication”.
I proceeded to check his blood pressure which was around 220/170! At that point I was hoping he wouldn’t stroke-out in my chair! I then suggested that he walk 2 doors down to the clinic so that a nurse could recheck his BP because I didn’t trust that my equipment was accurate and wanted to confirm his reading. I didn’t see the gentleman for a couple of weeks, at which time he returned to pay his bill and thank me for sending him to the clinic, as he was now recovering from his bypass surgery.
